Sunflower Challenge!

Room 11 were challenged to build the tallest sunflower as part of their Technology for Science.

Using lolly stick names, the children were grouped in teams of 4 and each child had a role using our co-op team badges: 'Air Traffic Controller', 'Materials Manager', 'Encourager' and 'Time Keeper.'

In 45 minutes the children were challenged to produce the tallest, free-standing sunflower using newspaper, art straws and masking tape. They found this challenging but did a fantastic job! At the end, each team gave an evaluation of how their team got on with the challenge. What went well? What could you have done better?

Team 1

Before

After

Team 1's sunflower was 145cm but in the end it was not able to stand by itself.
What went well? = we worked together as a team
What could you have done better? = the sunflower was stronger and stood by itself when it was smaller, so we shouldn't have added more height.
Great effort Team 1!

Team 2

Before

After

Team 2's sunflower was 74cm, but in the end it was not able to stand by itself.
What went well? = we worked well as a team
What could you have done better? = the sunflower stood by itself until we added the sunflower petals, so we could have thought of a stronger bit at the top to hold it up.
Super effort Team 2!

Team 3

Before

After

Team 3's sunflower was 75cm and was able to stand by itself!
What went well? = the sunflower was able to stand by itself
What could you have done better? = we could have worked better as a team
Well done Team 3!

Team 4

Before

After

Team 4's sunflower was 94cm and was able to stand by itself!
What went well? = we worked well as a team
What could you have done better? = if we made the sunflower straighter it would have been taller because it bent over to the side.
Super effort Team 4!

Team 5

Before

After

Team 5's sunflower was 151cm but in the end it was not able to stand by itself.
What went well? = we worked really well as a team. We rolled up newspaper to support the bottom of the sunflower which held it up but after time it didn't work.
What could you have done better? = we could have build a stronger base because it could stand and it ended up falling over.
Brilliant team effort Team 5!

Team 6

Before

After

Team 6's sunflower was 86cm, but in the end it was not able to stand by itself.
What went well? = the sunflower stood by itself for a long time but then we added more which made it fall over.
What could you have done better? = we could have worked better as a team
A very good effort Team 6!

A fantastic effort from all children in room 11. Well done!
